Researchers from the Optical Cell Biology group at the Gulbenkian Science Institute (IGC) have recently published in Nature Methods an innovative breakthrough in live-cell super-resolution microscopy, the enhanced Super-Resolution Radial Fluctuations (eSRRF). The eSRRF method incorporates automated data-driven parameter optimization, resulting in improved image fidelity and resolution compared to original methods, and a deeper understanding of biological systems.

Marking its 7th anniversary, in November, “90 Segundos de Ciência”, a spin-off from the Masters in Science Communication by ITQB NOVA and NOVA FCSH, secured the PODES 2023 award in the “Radio” category. With over 1,600 episodes, the show, now supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, continues to bring Portuguese science to Antena 1 every weekday.

Eleven NOVA Medical School students stood out in the rigorous and competitive Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) funding competition and were awarded PhD Studentships in the 2023 Call to develop their innovative and high-impact research projects in the medical and biomedical fields.

A team of iBET’s scientists attended the 15th edition of the largest protein and antibody engineering event in Europe, the Annual Protein and Antibody Engineering Summit (PEGS) Europe, which took place 14-16 November 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal.  iBET’s contribution to the conference included oral presentations by Gabriela Silva, Senior Scientist at the Advanced Cell Models Lab, Bárbara Fernandes, Senior Research Associate at the Bayer Satellite Lab, and Ana Sofia Coroadinha, Head of the Cell Line Development and Molecular Virology Lab, who also chaired a session.

Among 30 proposals, the PT – CancerConnect initiative was selected in 2022 by the Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation (AICIB) within the Stakeholders Group of the National Cancer Hub, as it meets the goals of the National Program for Oncological Diseases (PNDO). The project, presented by the researchers Jacinta Serpa, from NOVA Medical School and IPOLFG, and João Conde, from NOVA Medical School, aims to map the capacities, technologies and expertise of national scientists dedicated to oncology research. The first round of questionnaires took place in December 2022, mapping the institutions, research groups and technologies. The second round is collecting data on individual researchers and their expertise to become members of PT-CancerConnect. By establishing this network, the project hopes to leverage national and international collaborations to increase the competitiveness of oncology research in Portugal in international funding programs.
