iBET Scientists attended the 9th National Congress of the Agri-Food Industry on September 30th, an event that gathered key representatives from the agri-food sector to discuss critical industry topics, such as global market trends, fiscal competitiveness, growth, and digital transformation. This was the 1st participation of iBET’s Sustainability for Food & Health Division, and it was key to strengthening ties with crucial stakeholders in the National Agri-Food Sector.

Researchers at NOVA Medical School make groundbreaking discovery, paving the way for skin disease prevention and treatment. The Membrane Traffic in Disease lab, led by Duarte Barral, has just identified a new compartment within keratinocytes, skin cells essential for protection against the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which they have named “melanokerasome.” This discovery deepens the understanding of the mechanisms involved in melanin preservation — the pigment responsible for skin color — and creates new possibilities for the prevention of skin cancer and other diseases related to sun exposure.

A twinning project led by ITQB NOVA researcher Sarela Santamarina, in collaboration with Cláudia Santos, from NOVA Medical School, received €1.5M from Horizon Europe to develop organ-on-chip technologies for studying chronic diseases and host-microbe interactions. The “MPS NOVA Hub”, will create a European Center of Excellence, collaborating with international experts to improve understanding and treatment of complex health issues through innovative, human-relevant methodologies.
