2nd Edition – Seed Funding – Pathway to Larger Grants

The 2nd Edition of the “Seed Funding – Pathway to Larger Grants” call is now Open – Deadline February 14th, 2025 (until 23h59).

The main objective of this internal competitive call is to foster collaboration among partner institutions and enhance team preparedness for international funding applications.

The scheme will allocate funding for up to five short collaborative projects, each receiving up to €20,000 (max.), with a project duration spanning up to 9 months.

Projects within this initiative are expected to focus on the establishment of consortia, creation of required conditions, or the generation of pilot data, all aimed at leveraging applications for larger collaborative international grants.

Only LS4FUTURE Principal Investigators/Lab Heads from the partner institutions are eligible as main applicants.

The call will close on February 14th, and projects will be awarded in April 2025.

FAQs

Can the “Seed fund” be used to pay for salaries?

No, salaries are not eligible costs.

Does the “Seed fund” cover overheads?

No, these are institutional funds allocated from the LS4FUTURE budget at each partner institution.

Can a PI be involved in more than one application?

No, each PI is only allowed to participate in one application/team.

The specific topics for the designated international call my team wishes to apply for have not been released yet, can I still apply?

Yes, please provide an explanation about the context of the call and why your work topic is likely to be within its remit.

What is the main difference between Section 2 (Scope) and Section 3 (Action Plan)?

In Section 3 (Action plan), you are expected to describe how this seed funding award will help you leverage the designated international grant application (pilot data generation, consortia formation or the creation of other conditions required to apply to the designated international call). In Section 2, you are expected to describe the scientific work you and your collaborator(/s) intend to pursue in the designated international call and how it aligns with the LS4FUTURE mission.

Can NIMSB members apply to the Seed Funding Call?

Yes, PIs from NIMSB are welcome to submit their applications to the Seed Funding Call, both as main- and co-applicants.

Are research teams composed by NMS and NIMSB members exclusively eligible?

No, NIMSB members are considered within the NMS affiliation, so teams composed of only NMS and NIMSB members won’t be eligible as intra-institutional teams. However they are eligible if another LS4FUTURE Institution member is represented in this consortium (e.g from ITQB NOVA, iBET, IPOLFG or GIMM-Oeiras).
