The StartUp Research is a Post-Graduation program collaboratively built by scientists and entrepreneurs from ITQB NOVA and NOVA SBE designed to create awareness in researchers of the value their science can generate. The Program provides Life Sciences researchers with knowledge about Innovation Management, Business Modelling, while developing soft and entrepreneurship skills.
The program offers the following Attendance Scholarships:
ITQB NOVA SCHOLARSHIPS: 2 Full tuition Scholarships (€1500) / Edition are available for ITQB NOVA students and staff.
OEIRAS Valley SCHOLARSHIPS: In the scope of the Oeiras Valley initiative and strategic objectives, 15 x €1500 Scholarships / Edition are available. Although not-exclusive, Oeiras Valley scholarships will be preferentially awarded to candidates coming from SI&DT institutions located within the Oeiras Valley Ecosystem.
Members of the LS4FUTURE community are welcome to enroll to the program, with their application having the same priority as those coming from ITQB/OEIRAS Valley members.
The sixth edition of the StartUp Research Program – 2025 Edition will be held between May 7th and July 25th 2025.

Meet our speaker Miguel Santos:
Miguel Santos holds a BSc and a MSc degree in Biochemistry, Old Dominion University, VA, USA; a PhD in Molecular Biology, ITQB/UNL, PT; a Post-Doctorate in Genomics, UA, PT; and a degree in Project Management (PMI Intl.), UAL, PT; a Mini-MBA in Global Biopharma Entrepreneurship, Rutgers University, NJ, USA; and a MBA from the Institute of Business Management, ISCTE/FE Univ. Porto. Miguel has managed and led several scientific projects both in academic and industry settings, and coordinated the settlement of several services and brands in the Biotechnology market. From 2006 to 2017, Miguel was COO at ECBio S.A. a company dedicated to the development of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) based on mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). From 2019 to 2022, Miguel held a position of EVP Head of Innovation & Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at VF1883 Pharmaceuticals, a company aiming at innovating in the One-Health space. As an independent expert, Miguel has filled several Senior-Level Innovation Management roles, mostly within the Start-Up environment, in the areas of Biomedicine and Biotechnology. Miguel has a considerable portfolio of scientific publications and patents, essentially in Regenerative Medicine in a One-Health perspective. Currently, Miguel is Director for Innovation and Tech-Transfer at the NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology, a new centre of excellence that aims to apply emerging biomedical solutions and digital technologies in the field of Precision Medicine. Miguel is also an Invited Associate Professor at ITQB NOVA, where he coordinates and lectures both, the MSc/PhD – program (Bio)Entrepreneurship modules, and the StartUp Research Program – a Post-Graduation designed to pre-accelerate disruptive ideas in “Bio” space. Miguel is also Founder of Active Site, Innovation Management Consulting, Lda., PT; and Regenera Sciences CORP, DE, USA.
